Residents

Since its founding in 1981 Oakdale Foundation has served many special needs adults from various mental health backgrounds. The setting from which these individuals came have included psychiatric hospitals, referrals from various mental health services, residential schools, and families that could no longer sustain the individual and were in need of outside assistance.

Oakdale has in depth experience serving individuals with numerous behavioral and emotional difficulties. These problems include major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, ADHD, depression, PTSD, problems of social adjustment, etc. We have dealt with a wide range of issues including property destruction, fire setting, sexually inappropriate behaviors, history of physical aggression towards self and/or others, mental retardation, autistic spectrum disorders (Aspergers’s syndrome), dual diagnosis, syndromes (Down’s, Tourette’s, Prader-Willis, Turner’s), history of special education involvement, antisocial tendencies, and serious emotional disturbances.

Residents at Oakdale often experience concurrent medical issues. Historically we have had individuals who suffered with the concomitant medical disorders of Down Syndrome and Prader Willis syndrome. Among our current population residents are being treated for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, heart related problems, collapsed lung, seizures, and gastro intestinal problems. Oakdale’s residences can support 13 residents and currently support 11 individuals. Our residents vary in ages from 24-50. Some residents have been with Oakdale since it’s founding in 1981 and others have used Oakdale’s supports to acquire the skills they need for a more independent lifestyle and have transitioned to other living arrangements.

Each individual at Oakdale comes with their own unique qualities and issues. As such Oakdale creates programs with each individual to address the specific needs and goals and which also reflect each client’s preferences and personal values.
